Family conversation roadmap

Use these checkpoints to guide conversations without pressuring students into a final answer too early.

Grades 6-8: Notice interests

Talk about favorite subjects, hobbies, strengths, helping roles, hands-on interests, and careers students hear about. Keep options broad.

Grade 9: Build a foundation

Learn the 3Es, start a simple plan, choose courses thoughtfully, and ask how ninth-grade habits affect future options.

Grades 10-11: Test pathways

Explore AP, DE, CTE, credentials, JROTC, work-based learning, career research, college visits, job shadowing, and ASVAB career exploration where appropriate.

Grade 12: Confirm next steps

Finish applications, FAFSA/scholarships, resumes, credentials, enlistment questions, interviews, and a verified plan for after graduation.

Helpful questions to ask

These questions can prepare students for counselor, teacher, family, employer, college, or recruiter conversations.

Ask your student

  • What kind of work or learning makes you feel curious or confident?
  • Which classes feel connected to something you might want after high school?
  • Are you leaning toward college, work, military service, multiple options, or still exploring?
  • What feels confusing, stressful, or worth asking an adult about?

Ask the school

  • Which courses should this student consider next year based on their goals?
  • What prerequisites, applications, GPA, placement, transportation, or deadlines matter?
  • Which credentials, AP/DE options, CTE sequences, or work-based learning opportunities fit?
  • What details must be officially verified before the student makes a decision?
